Deirdre MurphyManager of HIPE and NPRS UnitAs manager of the HIPE and NPRS Unit Deirdre Murphy oversees the work of the teams producing these two national datasets. She has been involved with clinical coding in acute public hospitals since 1981. Her working knowledge of coding began with ICD-8 and the OPCS procedure codes and has followed the development of ICD-9 and ICD-9-CM, through to the current classification ICD-10-AM/ACHI/ACS. Deirdre has worked as a clinical coder and also now in the national office at the ESRI working in the areas of clinical classification, training, audit and data quality along with managing the Unit. She has also worked on clinical coding projects in the Czech Republic (EU), Bosnia-Herzegovina (WHO/World Bank), Spain (Ministry of Health) and in Lithuania. She holds a Masters from UCD and an MSc in Health Services Management from Trinity College Dublin. Her final MSc Thesis was a research project on the implementation of clinical coder accreditation in Ireland. She successfully completed the Introductory ICD-10-AM, ACHI and ACS Clinical Coding Course, Health Information Management Association Australia (HIMAA) (2012) and the Medical Terminology Challenge Examination (HIMAA) (2011).
