Health Research and Information Division

The HIPE and NPRS National Databases

The Health Research and Information Division has responsibility for support, management and development of two national data bases on behalf of the Health Service Executive. HIPE is the principal source of national data on discharges from acute hospitals in Ireland. NPRS provides national statistics on perinatal events, in particular data on pregnancy outcomes, perinatal mortality and important aspects of perinatal care.  For both data systems, the core objective of the work of the Division is ensuring that accurate data are available to users on a timely basis. Towards this end, the Division provides training in clinical coding to all hospital staff working in this area, in addition to developing and supporting the software requirements associated with data collection, reporting, validation etc. Regular audits of data quality are undertaken and users are supported by making data available via the web or directly responding to queries as appropriate.
