ESRI Conference: "Breastfeeding in Ireland 2012: Consequences and Policy Responses"

The ESRI in collaboration with the HSE National Office of Health Promotion are holding a half-day Conference on Monday 1 October to examine the consequences of Ireland’s low breastfeeding rate and explore policy responses.

Researchers from the ESRI will present recent work based on the Growing Up in Ireland Study and the National Perinatal Reporting System (NPRS) data to examine influences on the distribution of breastfeeding across the population, recent trends and the long-term consequences for both individual child and Irish society.

Dr Adriano Cattaneo from the Institute of Child Health, Trieste will speak about the economic implications of non-breastfeeding and the development of breastfeeding policy in Italy.

The National Breastfeeding Coordinator, HSE, Siobhan Hourigan and Dr. Genevieve Becker National Co-ordinator, the ‘Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative’ will discuss current and future breastfeeding policy in Ireland.

The Conference will be attended by the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Frances Fitzgerald TD scheduled to arrive at 10.00 am.
