Conference on "Socio-Economic Inequalities in Mortality in Ireland Over Time and Place"

Venue: ESRI, Whitaker Square, Sir John Rogerson's Quay, Dublin 2

For the last three years researchers at the ESRI, TCD and Maynooth University have been involved in the systematic study of mortality patterns in Ireland and how they vary between socio-economic groups. The research, funded by the Health Research Board (HRB), has examined trends in mortality differentials between socio-economic groups, that is, groups defined by the occupation that the person held at death, from the 1980s to the 2000s. The economic expansion associated with the ‘celtic tiger’ in Ireland had profound effects on the society and economy with important implications for mortality patterns. The research also provides analysis of the most recent data available on variation in death rates across Ireland and how these are related to patterns of social and economic deprivation. The conference will be addressed by Dr Stephanie O’Keeffe, National Director of Health and Well-Being for the Health Services Executive.

Keynote speaker:
Prof. Johan Mackenbach, one of the leading figures in the comparative study of socio-economic inequalities in mortality, will give the keynote presentation. Professor Mackenbach is Professor of Public Health and chair of the Department of Public Health at Erasmus MC, University Medical Center Rotterdam, the Netherlands. He has (co-)authored more than 500 papers in international, peer-reviewed scientific journals, as well as a number of books. He is a member of the Health Council of the Netherlands and the Council for Public Health and Health Care. He is also a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, and honorary professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
