2005 ESRI Geary Lecture: "Income and Child Development"
Venue: ESRI, 4 Burlington Road, Dublin 4
Speaker: Prof Greg Duncan, Institute for Policy Research, Northwestern University, Illinois
Greg Duncan is Professor of Education and Social Policy at Northwestern University and director of the Joint Center for Poverty Research. His research focuses on neighborhood effects on the development of children and adolescents and other issues involving welfare reform, income distribution, and its consequences for children and adults. His Ph.D. in economics is from the University of Michigan, where he also served on the faculty for 13 years while principal investigator of the Panel Study of Income Dynamics project.
The Geary lectures are delivered by internationally eminent economists, sociologists and statisticians and are subsequently published by the ESRI. Roy Geary, Ireland's greatest statistician, was born in 1896 and died in 1983. He was the first director of the ESRI, which to some degree owed its creation to the potential research content of data assembled by the Central Statistics Office under Geary's direction, and also to the prestige he had acquired through his published academic work. When he retired as Director in 1966, the ESRI established an annual lecture in his honour.
