ESRI Annual Geary Lecture: “Austerity, the Public Sector and the Threat to Gender Equality”

This year's ESRI Geary Lecture will be held on Thursday 23 October at 4pm at the ESRI. It will be delivered by Professor Jill Rubery, University of Manchester Business School.

Professor Jill Rubery is Chair of Comparative Employment Systems at University of Manchester Business School. She has been one of the most influential figures in economic sociology over the last two decades. Her research work and publications have covered, amongst other topics, labour market regulation policies and the role of minimum wages; new forms of work and flexibility; women's employment and women's pay; employers' working-time policies; and international comparative labour market analyses. Professor Rubery has been involved in a large number of research projects, sponsored by the ESRC, the Equal Opportunities Commission, the Leverhulme Trust, the ILO and the European Commission amongst others. She is a fellow of the British Academy and an emeritus fellow of New Hall, University of Cambridge. More detail on Professor Jill Rubery.

The Geary lecture is organised each year by the ESRI and honours Dr R. C. Geary (1896 –1983), the first Director of the Institute. Dr Geary is regarded as the most eminent Irish statistician of the twentieth century. Lectures have been given by some of the world’s foremost scholars in the fields of economics, statistics and sociology, including a number of Nobel Prize winners.
