Abstract

In a context of low productivity and deteriorating mental health in England (although similar trends are evident across most of the world), we study how economic productivity at the geographical labour market level is associated with inequalities in population mental health. We rely on a panel dataset from 2011 to 2019 at the Travel To Work Area (TTWA) level; a statistical geography where the population would generally commute to a larger town, city or conurbation for the purposes of employment. Using granular data of population mental health, we are able to account for the distribution of mental health within the area and explore how (socio-economic) inequalities in mental health are associated with economic productivity. Our preliminary results suggest that areas with higher levels of inequalities in mental health have lower levels of economic productivity.
