ESRI Seminar: "Equality and Human Rights Monitoring in Britain: Theory and Practice"

Recent years have witnessed a proliferation of monitoring exercises on social and economic outcomes, many with relevance to equality and human rights. But the theoretical basis for such exercises is not always clear, leading to doubts about the coherence of the results. This talk focuses on the development of the Equality Measurement Framework and the Human Rights Measurement Framework for the Equality and Human Rights Commission in Britain, including its grounding in the capability approach. It covers practical, data and communication challenges as well as emerging issues and new directions for monitoring.

Dr Tania Burchardt is Director of the Centre for Analysis of Social Exclusion and an Associate Professor in the Department of Social Policy at the London School of Economics. Her research interests lie in theories of justice, including the capability approach, measurement of inequality and applied welfare policy analysis. She is co-chair of the Equality and Diversity Forum Research Network, which seeks to bring together academics, policymakers and voluntary sector organisations working in these areas.
