This Growing Up in Ireland Conference on ‘Children’s Engagement in Education’ will be opened by Mr Ruairi Quinn TD, Minister for Education and Skills, on Wednesday 8 May at the ESRI.

Growing Up in Ireland is the national longitudinal study of children. It follows the development of almost 20,000 children and investigates how they are faring in a number of key aspects of their lives, including their education, learning and cognitive development.
Keynote Speaker
The keynote speaker will be Professor Pamela Sammons, Professor of Education, Department of Education, University of Oxford. Her research interests include: educational effectiveness and the promotion of equity in education, school improvement and educational reform, early years education and longitudinal studies.Conference Presentations

A number of papers will be presented on policy relevant issues around children’s engagement in education and attitudes to school. The closing paper will be given by Dr Sarah Fitzpatrick, Deputy CEO, National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA).
Growing Up in Ireland is a Government study. It is funded by the Department of Children and Youth Affairs in association with the Department of Social Protection and the Central Statistics Office. The Department of Children and Youth Affairs is overseeing and managing the Study, which is being carried out by a consortium of researchers led by the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) and Trinity College Dublin.
