"The Impact of Changes in Educational Attainment on Life Expectancy in Ireland", by John FitzGerald, (co-authored with David Byrne and Nusa Znuderl), ESRI, will be delivered at the Statistical and Social Inquiry Society of Ireland (SSISI) meeting on Thursday 6th December 2012 at 6.00 pm, at the Royal Irish Academy, 19 Dawson Street, Dublin 2.

Abstract

This paper considers how rising educational attainment will affect average life expectancy in future years. CSO data on life expectancy by level of education, together with data from the Quarterly National Household Survey, are used to develop the ESRI demographic model. This enhanced model suggests that the combination of a rising share of the population with third level education, together with the observed higher life expectancies for this group, will make a substantial contribution to the rising share of the population aged over 65 in future decades The results also show that the number of deaths among men aged 20 to 34 years, with only primary or lower secondary education, is substantially higher than for men with higher levels of education in the same age group.
