Understanding attitudes to Travellers and Roma in Ireland
This event will launch the report Understanding attitudes to Travellers and Roma in Ireland’ by Evan Carron-Kee, Fran McGinnity, and Anousheh Alamir.
The Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth funded this report.
Understanding the attitudes of the general population towards Travellers and Roma is important for understanding the opportunities and barriers to their social inclusion. The report draws on a unique representative survey on attitudes to diversity from 2023 about how comfortable people are with a range of social groups as neighbours, in their child’s class at school and in a relationship with their child, examining which factors in people’s lives are associated with these comfort levels. The survey analysis is supplemented by an analysis of Census 2022 data on the situation of Irish Travellers and Roma compared to the White Irish population.
The event will include a presentation of the key findings by report authors Frances McGinnity, Evan Carron-Kee and Anousheh Alamir, as well as a panel discussion of the implications. This report is part of a joint research programme on integration and equality funded by the Department of Children, Equality, Disability Integration and Youth.
