Schools are at the forefront of attempts to integrate an increasingly multicultural population, build an inclusive society for disabled people, and tackle persistent socioeconomic inequality. This chapter assesses recent evidence on the success of policy in supporting inclusion within and beyond Irish schools and looks at how students are faring in the midst of wider societal changes. The discussion draws on combined psychological and sociological theories understanding inclusion and exclusion at different institutional levels. Focusing on recent evidence from Ireland, the chapter provides unique insights into understanding inclusion and how it is best achieved, highlighting policy priorities for the period ahead.
