ESRI Newsletter, August 2022

We tend to launch fewer reports in the months of July and August but two reports that were launched over this period received much attention. The study ‘Future trends in housing tenure and the adequacy of retirement income’ was funded by the Pensions Council and looked at likely changing patterns of home-ownership among future retirees. The healthcare team published ‘Projections of workforce requirements for public acute hospitals in Ireland, 2019–2035: a regional analysis based on the Hippocrates model’ – key reading for anyone interested in future healthcare needs in this country. Research Bulletins in this period covered topics on everyone’s mind, such as the cost of decarbonisation. And issues we should perhaps give more thought towards, such as the impact of road traffic noise on older adults' quality of life and mental health.

Next month we will be hosting a webinar to launch the paper ‘Unequal Chances? Inequalities in Mortality in the Republic of Ireland’. This report was commissioned by the Institute of Public Health and examines inequalities in mortality in Ireland over the period since 2000. Our annual, and always highly anticipated, Post-Budget Briefing will take place in Dublin city centre on September 30th. You can find registration details for both events below.

I am delighted to report that in recent months Google, Kingspan and Meta have agreed to become Whitaker Patrons of the ESRI and are each contributing €20,000 this year to support the work of the Institute. In addition, the following companies have joined as corporate members and are each contributing €5,000: PwC, ABP Foods, KPMG, IBEC, DCC plc, Department of Transport, FBD, Department of Further Education, Research, Innovation and Science, IDA, Irish Water, Greencoat Capital, Malin plc, Failte Ireland, SIPTU, Bord Gáis Energy, Department of Agriculture and Marine, IFA, Irish Life, NTMA, Department of Foreign Affairs, Bord Bia, Deloitte, Higher Education Authority, Dublin Bus and Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC).
