The Economic and Social Opportunities from Increased Cooperation on the Shared Island
The ESRI has a joint research programme with the Department of the Taoiseach titled The Economic and Social Opportunities from Increased Cooperation on the Shared Island. The purpose of the research programme is to produce research outputs which will add to understanding of current and potential linkages across the island of Ireland in a range of economic, social and environmental domains. In the previous three years, the research focussed on aspects of the health and education sectors from an all-island perspective, cross-border services trade, enhancing attractiveness to high-value foreign direct investment, renewable energy supports, migrant integration; early childhood care and education; student mobility, gender and labour market inclusion; social attitudes, and housing supply on the island of Ireland (links below). We have a playlist on our YouTube channel with presentations of report findings. In 2024, the research will examine child poverty, drivers of income inequality, an overview of the economies north and south and learnings from comparative studies of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
